While pirates are often portrayed as caviler, bright and larger than life, I imagined a man bearing the weight of all he had seen and done. Doomed to survive, forever the guilty conscience, forever the remaining charred bone after the flesh burnt away - he acts with regrets hollowing him out, but he acts none the less.
