About Dominique Vargo

I consider myself an abstract and surreal artist who works mostly in black and white with pens and pencils. I love to create images with lots of movement and flow. My subjects include angelic creatures, earthen elements and celestial objects. My creation is driven by my subconscious thoughts to express emotional moments or fights against unseen forces that viewers can relate to or identify with, not dictating what others should feel but only that they can and they’re not alone. Most of my creations start out as brief sketches of an idea. The images evolve as each pen or pencil mark is laid. I never know what will happen in the areas not originally planned in the concept sketches. I let the emerging image guide the next mark. I am fascinated by the creation of something from nothingness, giving life to blankness, bringing order to chaos.

I love nature. I go hiking whenever I can. When I do, the hike always takes much longer because I am always stopping to take pictures of various flora, trees, moss, tangled roots, birds, clouds, mountains, just anything in nature that is interesting to me. Over the years I've collected quite a bit of photographs.

I also love creating art. The idea of starting with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper, then creating lines and shades on the paper with the pencil, and it becomes something fascinating, something unique, something that others can view and see your vision, is absolutely breathtaking to me. On the other hand, nature is the universe's canvas bringing to life what sometimes seems unimaginable. As an awe inspiring, humbling, and creative force, nature inspires me to entwine those forces I see in my mind's eye into my own artistic vision.

I think art and nature are so intertwined. Nature is art and art can depict nature so vividly. I want to share my love of art and nature with lots of people who share my passion. This is my project on Kickstarter, called "Drawn From Nature." Each year I select a nature theme. I draw 20 illustrations, chosen from my own source of photos. The "Drawn From Nature" project runs each January during the Kickstarter Make 100 campaign.
