Gaia is one of the first and oldest primordial deities in all of Greek mythology. She created Uranus (the sky) and Pontus (the sea), with whom she then conceived many of the Titian gods and goddesses, sea gods, Giants, and Cyclopes. She is also one of the original symbols of Mother Earth, giving form to the world and all life within it. In my icon-style piece of the legendary Gaia, I wanted to illustrate the night sky above with her veils transforming into the sea beneath. She is Earth's creator, and the source of the Titians whom brought forth many of the gods and goddesses. To symbolize her connections I've used branches to depict a number of prominent deities, including Helios (the sun) and Selene (the moon). The waters below morph into creatures of the sea, as lilies (one of her symbols for life and spirit) bloom around her, with the Universe at her center.
