Location: Indiana USACreated for an exhibition with Indiana State University to raise awareness about the beneficial impact of bats on our local ecology. Disperse features a bat in flight while colonized by fruiting fungi exploring a theme I enjoy of modifying food chain dynamics. Rooting a completely sedentary organism like fungi onto the back of one of an extremely mobile mammal capable of flight in a relationship that thrives. Much like fruit bats will act as pollinators to help disperse pollen, this bat disperses mycelial spores for it's fungal colony. Part of an ongoing series by Shawn that disrupts power dynamics in the food web in ways that are mutually beneficial to those at the bottom and the top. Wildlife Referenced: Cape Long Eared Bat (Nycteris thebaica) with creative liberties taken + fictional fungi based on many species with white caps and long stems.
